08:58 pm - Employment

I am looking for a job and was wondering if you could help me out. By August 2008, I will have graduated with an MA in Communications and Culture and a specialization in Politics and Policy from York University in Toronto.

Perhaps your uncle’s cousin’s sister is in the field of health care policy, environmental policy or foreign policy. Please ask around if you suspect that there may be any openings for a Policy Analyst or Researcher.

My most recent position was as a Research Assistant for York University. During this position, I headed the policy portion of a 3-year study which is aiming to assess how Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) are used in post-secondary institutions by students, faculty and staff.

I have written and edited a variety of communications materials including press releases, backgrounders, grant proposals, blog entries and policy papers. For example, while working for Ossim Shalom, Social Workers for Peace and Social Welfare I wrote grant proposals to foundations in Europe and North America in support of dialog workshops between Palestinians and Israelis.

My verbal communications experiences include liaising with media, conducting focus groups and publicly embarrassing myself while executing promotional events in front of movie theater audiences. I have also presented academic research on civil liberty issues at international academic conferences such as at the Hope: Probing the Boundaries Conference at Oxford University, UK.

If you know anyone who might be interested, please pass on my contact info to them: Linovski yorku ca
I will gladly send my CV.

Thanks a lot!

05:42 pm - Israel posts clips on YouTube of J'lem yeshiva terror attack

http://haaretz.com/hasen/spages/969094.html

By Guy Grimland, TheMarker
Tags: Jerusalem, YouTube, PMO

The government recently posted three videos showing images from the terror attack at Jerusalem's Mercaz Harav Yeshiva earlier this month in which eight students were killed.

The three videos were posted under the titles "Stop the Terror, Stop the Bloodshed," "Act NOW: Stop The Bloodshed - Stop the Terror," and "Emergency call, March 7, Jerusalem."

While the person named as poster, AtiyaRachel, was not identified as having any connection to the government, TheMarker has learned that the Prime Minister's Office was actually behind the uploads to the popular video site.

This is the first time that a government body has used the site in response to a terror attack.

The first film features graphic and bloody footage shot inside the yeshiva in the wake of the attack, as English subtitles document an emergency call made by a yeshiva student during the attack.

The one-minute video attracted over 5,300 viewings and 88 responses as of Wednesday night. You can view the footage below. Please note that this footage contains images of a graphic nature.

The second film, seen below, is shorter, at 27 seconds, and is entitled "Act Now: Stop the Bloodshed, Stop the Terror. It features similar images, with solemn background music and title screens in English describing the attack.

Please note that YouTube users flagged this video as being unsuitable for under-18s.

The third is a slightly longer version of the second.

In the past, the government has responded to terror attacks with official statements to radio and television stations. A source connected to the latest measure has told TheMarker that Jerusalem will upload videos to YouTube in the event of any future terror attacks.

PM okays 750 new settlement homes, says fits state policy
By Barak Ravid, Haaretz Correspondent, and News Agencies
Tags: Housing Ministry, Ze'ev Boim

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has approved the renewed construction of hundreds of new homes in the West Bank settlement of Givat Ze'ev near Jerusalem, the Housing Ministry said Sunday.

The project, which is expected to include an estimated 750 homes in the Agan Ayelot neighborhood of Givat Ze'ev drew criticism from the Palestinian Authority over Israel's commitment to the peace process.

The prime minister's spokesman said the project was in line with the state's current policy on construction in existing settlements.

"The project was approved by previous governments, and Olmert approved its resumption because it meshes with government policy," he said.

"It is consistent with our long-standing position that building within the large settlement blocs, which will stay a part of Israel in any final status agreement, will continue," Regev said. "Construction outside the settlement blocs has been frozen."

Boim said Sunday that, "The addition of hundreds of housing units is part of a policy aimed at meeting demand and keeping prices level, while
addressing the demographic needs of Jerusalem. I intend to continue and work towards this policy in order to strengthen Jerusalem."

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said the decision to build new housing
in Givat Zeev raised doubts about Israel's commitment to peace talks.

"It seems to me the Israelis are determined to put a stick in the wheel of negotiations," he said. "It will undermine the U.S. effort to revive the negotiations."

He noted the decision came just days before a U.S. envoy, Lt. Gen. William Fraser III, arrives in the region for his first joint meeting with Israelis and Palestinians. President George W. Bush appointed Fraser in January to monitor implementation of the U.S.-backed road map peace plan - which among other things calls on Israel to freeze all settlement activity and the Palestinians to disarm militants.

The Housing Ministry and Israel Lands Administration (ILA) started marketing lots for the housing units in 1999, but stopped near the end of 2000 after the eruption of the Second Intifada.

As a result of high demand for the housing, along with the relative calm in the security situation, the contractors who had won tenders to develop the project had asked the Housing Ministry to allow them to renew construction.

Israel Radio reported that Shas, a key partner in the government coalition, had threatened to bolt the government unless the construction was approved.

Housing Minister Ze'ev Boim held numerous meetings regarding the contractors' request, including with Olmert. Following the Har Homa construction a few moths ago, Olmert had asked Boim to update him regarding similar projects, in order to make decisions and strategize how to explain them to the international community.

Olmert and Boim approved the renewal of construction in Givat Ze'ev, and in the first stage of the project 200 housing units will be built.

UNSC fails to condemn J'lem shooting
By JPOST.COM STAFF

The UN Security Council failed to reach an agreement overnight Thursday on issuing an official condemnation over the deadly shooting attack in Jerusalem's Mercaz Harav Yeshiva because of Libyan opposition.

"Most members (of the council) wanted to condemn (the attack) but Libya blocked it," Israel's ambassador to the UN, Dan Gillerman, told reporters.

US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said US efforts to issue a statement condemning the attack "in the strongest terms" failed because Libya sought to link it to its own resolution urging condemnation of Israel over the IDF operation in the Gaza Strip last week.

Khalilzad criticized Libya, saying that a terror attack specifically targeting civilians could not be equated to military operations aimed at stopping rocket fire.

Ambassador Vitaly Churkin of Russia, which currently holds the rotating monthly presidency of the Security Council, expressed his frustration over the fact that UNSC member states could not come to a decision to issue a condemnations for a terror attack and were instead getting bogged down by complexities over the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"What kind of specific horrendous terror attack in the area will it take to make the Council condemn without going through all the history of the region," he said.

Earlier Thursday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the shooting, calling it a "savage attack."

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban deplored the deliberate killing and injuring of civilians and offered his condolences to the families of those killed.

"The Secretary-General is deeply concerned at the potential for continued acts of violence and terrorism to undermine the political process, which he believes must be pursued to achieve a secure and lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians, based on a two-State solution," the statement said.

Study: Gaza humanitarian situation worst since 1967
By The Associated Press
Tags: British aid groups

A coalition of eight British-based human rights organizations on Thursday released a scathing report in claiming that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is at its worst point since Israel captured the territory in 1967.

The report said that more than 1.1 million people, about 80 percent of Gaza's residents, are now dependent on food aid, as opposed to 63 percent in 2006, unemployment is close to 40 percent and close to 70 percent of the 110,000 workers employed in the private sector have lost their jobs.

It also said that hospitals are suffering from power cuts of up to 12 hours a day, and the water and sewage systems were close to collapse, with 40-50 million liters of sewage pouring into the sea daily.

The report follows strident international condemnation of Israel after it struck hard against Palestinian militants in Gaza, killing more than 120 in the past week, including many civilians, after Palestinians militants escalated their daily rocket fire at Israel.

The rockets have killed 13 people, wounded dozens more, traumatized thousands and caused millions of dollars in damage. Last week longer-range rockets reached Ashkelon, a city of 120,000 people, about 17 kilometers north of Gaza, prompting the harsh Israeli response.

The Defense Ministry rejected the report, blaming the militant Hamas rulers of Gaza for the hardships.

"Israel has the right and obligation to protect its citizens, but as the occupying power in Gaza it also has a legal duty to ensure that Gazans have access to food, clean water, electricity and medical care," said Amnesty International U.K. Director Kate Allen, one of groups behind the report. "Punishing the entire Gazan population by denying them these basic human rights is utterly indefensible. The current situation is man-made and must be reversed."

The Foreign Ministry issued a report denying Israeli culpability in the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, saying human rights groups "should point their criticism towards the Hamas terrorist organization that controls the Gaza Strip, and not against the State of Israel."

The 16-page report - sponsored by Amnesty, along with CARE International U.K., CAFOD, Christian Aid, Medecins du Monde UK, Oxfam, Save the Children U.K. and Trocaire - calls on the British government to exert greater pressure on Israel and to reverse its policy on not negotiating with Gaza's Hamas rulers.

Israel and the West shun Hamas and label it a terrorist organization. Hamas does not accept the presence of a Jewish state in an Islamic Middle East and has sent dozens of suicide bombers into Israel, most recently a month ago.

The report adds that it considers Israel's blockade of Gaza as unacceptable and illegal collective punishment.

Replying to the report, the Defense Ministry said it was misdirected.

"The main responsibility for events in Gaza - since the withdrawal of Israel from the territory and the uprooting of the settlements there - is the Hamas organization, to which all complaints should be addressed, read a statement a spokesman," Maj. Peter Lerner.

This week NGO Monitor, a Jerusalem-based watchdog, called on human rights groups to end what it called their political use of international law. It cited an Amnesty International press release that it said made unsubstantiated accusations that Israeli responses are being carried out with reckless disregard for civilian life.

"NGOs and human rights groups must end their irresponsible and immoral use of legal rhetoric," said Gerald Steinberg, Executive Director of NGO Monitor. "False claims of disproportionate force and collective punishment by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch make a mockery of international law."

Report: East Jerusalem resident behind attack
Eight killed in terrorist attack at Jerusalem yeshiva
By Jonathan Lis, Yair Ettinger and Amos Harel, Haaretz Correspondents
Tags: Israel, Palestinians

Eight people were killed and nine others were wounded Thursday evening when terrorists infiltrated the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in the Kiryat Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem, police said.

Three of the injured were listed as being in serious condition and taken to Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Karem, while the other six were lightly hurt and taken to Sha'arei Tzedek Medical Center. One of the injured is 15 years old. MDA declared the incident a "multiple casualty event."

Jerusalem District police chief Aharon Franco said the terrorist entered the yeshiva, pulled out an automatic weapon from his bag and began firing in all directions.

An Israel Defense Forces paratrooper who had his weapon with him engaged the terrorist in a gun battle, and two police detectives who arrived on the scene also fired at the assailant. The terrorist was killed in the incident.

Media reports said the terrorist was apparently a resident of East Jerusalem.

An organization calling itself "Galilee Freedom Battalions - the Martyrs of Imad Mughniyeh" took responsiblity for the attack, according to Hezbollah's Al-Manar television. The veracity of the claim was not clear.

Hezbollah has vowed to avenge last month's assassination of its terror chief, Imad Mughniyeh, in Damascus. The organization has blamed Israel, which has denied any role in the killing.

A large number of security and emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene, with some 50 ambulances summoned.

Police and Israel Defense Forces troops searched the complex and the surrounding area for nearly two hours in order to determine whether a second or possibly third terrorist was still holed up inside the yeshiva or had fled.

The evacuation of the dead and wounded was delayed due to the searches.

Israel said planning to apologize to ex-Beatles for '65 concert ban
By Haaretz Service and News Agencies
Tags: Beatles, Ringo Starr

More than four decades after Israeli officials banned the Beatles from appearing at a scheduled 1965 concert, Israel is to extend the band an official apology on Monday, and invite surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to take part in celebrations of the nation's 60th anniversary this year, Army Radio reported.

It said Israeli Ambassador to Britain Ron Prosor would present the apology to slain Beatle John Lennon's sister Julia Bairdat at the Beatles museum in their hometown of Liverpool.

Letters of apology are to be sent to McCartney and Starr as well as relatives of late band members John Lennon and George Harrison, it said.

The Beatles had been booked to appear in Israel, but government
officials refused to grant the necessary permits, citing concerns that the tousled-haired British band and its strident, amplified music could corrupt the morals of Israeli youth.

The never-used tickets for the concert have long been a prized souvenir among Israeli fans of the group.

In Jerusalem, Foreign Ministry spokesman Arye Mekel confirmed that Prosor
would meet Baird and invite her to Israel for the gala marking Israel's
founding in May, 1948. But he said he had no knowledge of any letter of apology or of invitations to Paul and Ringo to perform.
